Now, to be fair, many aspects of football don’t require a high IQ. Speed, strength, conditioning, technique, recruiting, leadership, etc.
But in game decision making is one area where intelligence can really be helpful. For what it’s worth, I think Jimbo Fisher is another example of someone who is on the lower end of the IQ scale at his level of the profession. He’s great at other things, and having someone like Jameis Winston helped cover his deficiencies, but when you listen to him compared to a Harbaugh or a Saban, it’s clear he doesn’t have the same caliber of brain.
The 4th and 19 is a really extreme example, but we see these just absolute low IQ decisions every game. Even that Coastal Carolina game… there are a few key plays that turned that game where I simply can’t fathom what our staff was thinking (most particularly the third and short with a dumb play call then the fourth and 2 with the weird flea flicker that failed and gave them a short field).
