In Austria. It's far cheaper and more traditional. Bavaria is also cheap, although a little less traditional. In the Alps, my kids LOVE Alpine slides (MUCH cheaper than in the USA), crazy kids-focused ropes courses (also so cheap), hiking up in the meadows (accessible via cable cars), the many indoor mini water parks, the fondue, raclette, schnitzel, pommes, sausages, chocolate, castles, and quirky local Alpine concerts and cultural events. If you spend a summer weekend in the Alps, there's almost always village street parties where people still dress in lederhosen and dirndls. So much fun to join in such old-fashioned festivities while the evenings are warm.
