encouragement to do sports like we do today, I think it's way more likely that someone else entirely would have won the Olympics instead of him. He was born 20 years after slavery was abolished and did most of his sports in the middle of the great depression. It's not like African American kids (or even most white kids of his day) would even have the opportunity to play one sport, let alone four sports.
