I read it differently. Runner on first does not
have relief on first base once the batter becomes a runner.
I have actually thought about this situation before and thought that it didn’t seem fair, but I think the rules address it.
But I could be wrong.

Baseball rules question

Depends on what the 1st basemen does after letting it drop.

I meant to ask, “he cannot be tagged out, correct?”
Endocoug
10/21/20 5:47pm
If he lets it drop, picks it up, and touches first base the batter is out.
SlantRoute
10/21/20 5:56pm
What if he tags the runner (who is standing on first) then tags the 1st base?
Endocoug
10/21/20 6:01pm
He doesn’t have to advance. He can occupy first as long as batter doesn’t
SlantRoute
10/21/20 6:02pm
Not true, if the batter puts the ball in play and it isn’t caught the runner

I have never seen this situation but believe you're incorrect. Once the force is on he isn't safe standing on first.

This situation happened in my son’s game tonight.
Endocoug
10/21/20 6:23pm
I believe your son is out. However, my son was once hosed on a call at first and I went over the video like the zapruder
shimmy
10/21/20 6:38pm
It didn’t involve my son.
Endocoug
10/21/20 7:05pm
My bad. Hope it wasn’t consequential.
shimmy
10/21/20 7:09pm
Then it’s a double play
USMCdad
10/21/20 6:03pm
Yeah, I still don’t think so.
Endocoug
10/21/20 6:21pm
The exact same thing happened in the mlb at it depends when you tag the guy.
shimmy
10/21/20 6:42pm
You have a columnist saying he would be “compelled to run”

10/21/20 7:10pm
If you tag him out before you touch first base you tagged the

Does that link reference a rule?

He has to advance.

10/21/20 5:46pm
So, if he stays at first and the 1st baseman touches first before the batter
Endocoug
10/21/20 5:48pm
He can advance or return. No force out opportunity remains for the defense

10/21/20 5:51pm
Infield fly rule applies
USMCdad
10/21/20 5:48pm
No it doesn’t.
Endocoug
10/21/20 5:48pm
Why not, they call the batter out and then the runner is on his own
USMCdad
10/21/20 5:49pm
There has to be runners on 1st and second and less than 2 outs. And infield fly has to be called by an ump. It isn't
shimmy
10/21/20 5:50pm
Gotcha, so the batter will need to get to first before it’s dropped
USMCdad
10/21/20 5:52pm
Right. If you hit an infield pop up so high you can reach first before it is caught, you turn the play into an infield
shimmy
10/21/20 5:54pm
Need runners on first AND second

Yeah spaced that part

Never an infield fly with only one runner on base

Infield Fly Rule.
JAGA97

Nope

not applicable in this instance.

10/21/20 5:49pm
Because of only 1 runner. Got it.
JAGA97
10/21/20 5:51pm
And it has to be expressly called by the umpire. Even if it is textbook, if the umpire doesn't call it then it doesn't

Typical baseball, identify an opportunity of a very exciting play and make it
Pretorian
10/21/20 6:40pm
You mean if he stays standing on the base? He can absolutely be tagged.
shimmy
10/21/20 5:49pm
I know he can be tagged. But is he called out? That is the question.
Endocoug
10/21/20 5:50pm
Yes. If the 1B lets the ball drop he can tag the runner on first or throw to 2nd
ponys
10/21/20 5:52pm
I typed my response to the OP for some reason. Ponys is correct.
shimmy
10/21/20 5:53pm
Can anyone cite the rule?
Endocoug
10/21/20 6:02pm
Here is the little league rule, emphasis added.
shimmy
10/21/20 6:10pm
I read that rule as the runner is entitled to the base until the batter
Endocoug

Found from another forum, so I can only assume that the citation is correct.

The way I read that, the runner is “forced to vacate”
Endocoug
10/21/20 6:18pm
I read it differently. Runner on first does not
Backslidercoug
10/21/20 6:57pm
Runner on first in that instance is forced to vacate so he isn’t

You can tag a player out standing on a bag if they are not safe on the bag. They could tag the runner standing on first

If he does not advance I believe he would be safe, but the runner they hit the ball would be out. Because the lead
JOPE

Lead runner doesn't get the base on a force. If that was the case on a sharp grounder you'd have the guy on 1st retreat
shimmy
10/21/20 5:56pm
What?!?!? Retreat to first?!?!

10/21/20 5:59pm
That was a response to the situation where 2 runners are on the base. So long as the runner is forced to go to 2nd, he

So, you’re saying the runner would be safe while standing on first base?
Endocoug
10/21/20 6:24pm
The ump has to make a call, but yes, the batter should be out.
Corn Pop
