His parents chose to stay in Logan that night and watch his little brother's hig
school game because Riley was not expected to play at all that night. Then they started getting phone calls. They missed the whole thing.
Some fans may not know or remember that Riley's dad was a doctor affiliated with USU. A prominent Logan family. Riley originally played for USU and later transferred to BYU. This was as much a USU family as the Wilson's were a Utah family.
Riley Nelson walked away from that, came to Provo, sat out, waited his turn, and gave everything he had to BYU.
And, then, when USU was on the verge of beating up Jake Heaps and BYU badly for the 2nd season in a row - Nelson led that improbable comeback.
I was in the stands agonizing over that game.

Sitting in the end zone at ND, I can still see the awful throw to a wide open Hoffman. So bad. Would have been a score.
