of course they should pick the guy who gives them the best chance to win and let
the chips fall where they may. And of course there should be an open competition to be the starter that is based on production and wins and who the team responds the best to. I think we both agree on those points.

But when there is nuance...like an injured starter coming off a hand injury and shoulder surgery... its not always an easy decision.

And yeah i do worry about whether or not my decision would cause a split in the lockeroom or cause a talented player to transfer. Do you think it would be great for the program to see Jaren Hall go to Utah State for playing time to replace Jordan Love? Do you want to see Baylor Romney transfer to Boise State or some Texas school? Do you want to see Zach Wilson get picked up by the Utes? Those are all disasters waiting to happen if you don't treat these kind of decisions the right way. Yeah the best way to keep guys is to let them know they are all in the running for getting the job and that its an open competition. But who gets to start a game is a big deal and a huge decision with a lot of ramifications. They would be silly not to consider the potential ramifications of these decisions.
