BYU has a very conservative rep when it comes to pretty much everything. This year, Kalani is pushing the envelope a little bit with the shift to more royal. Why do you think that is? Because the blue hairs out there like it? Nope. It's because it's sexier for recruits. Jumpman is sexier for recruits as well. If you don't believe me, ask Michigan, Florida, Oklahoma, or UNC how "idiotic" it is to have Jordan sponsored gear. Here is Coach Mullen on Florida joining Jordan:
"I can't wait to roll into SEC Media Days with a fresh pair of Jordans. I will be rocking them in recruiting as well," Mullen told CBS Sports. "Recruits are always asking about swag and what kind of gear we have. ... Obviously, it is a great marketing and branding advantage to be associated with the Jordan Brand — and at the same time, the gear is comfortable and functional for our players."
Houston just joined as well. Each player got some retro Jordans as part of their gear.
"While UH will continue to be a Nike school, the most noticeable difference will be the Nike trademark Swoosh replaced by the Jumpman logo. Sampson said the Cougars will be a "cutting edge" Jordan Brand member, wearing the latest in apparel and shoes. As part of Friday's announcement, each player received a pair of Air Jordan 9 Retro."
If you don't think this could help in recruiting then I don't think you're paying attention. For BYU, all that would change would be the logo on the jersey and the swag that they're giving the kids and that fans are buying. If there is an opportunity for BYU to make this change I would do it in an instant.
