I was hypercritical of him at the beginning of the season. I thought he should have been fired after last season along with Detmer. But I have to say, despite my wish that they would be more aggressive (which has improved some over the past several weeks), Tuiaki has vindicated himself quite nicely. BYU is ranked 27th nationally in total defense and 32nd in scoring defense. Really can't argue with that. I know they need to get more sacks, TFL's and turnovers, but these numbers kind of speak for themselves.
I still have my gripes, but the fact is that other than the Washington and USU games, the defense has played well enough for BYU to win, had the offense not layed several eggs. Cal, NIU and Boise were all winnable games because the defense did it's job. If the offense had played better BYU might be 6-3, rather than 4-5.
And if the offense had played better vs USU, maybe BYU pulls that game out in a shootout. USU unfortunately is really good this yer, but I think a better offense gives BYU a better chance vs them as well.
This is also why I have pulled back from the ledge some and will wait for the end of the season to call for heads on a platter.
