I dunno, I've had some pretty glorious days on the lake. but yeah, that's true
for a lot of people. We store ours for free and we do all the winterizing and maintenance ourselves. I probably wouldn't own one if it weren't shared with my inlaws who my FIL knows how to maintain and fix any issues that come up.
