It's the combination of beating a highly ranked team in a game that is necessary
to go to the NCAA and in a setting where we have consistently lost. Not saying just because their ranked it's a big game, but, it is bigger than a game like the 01 game. In 01 BYU beat a bunch of mediocre teams in what was a 1 bid conference, it wasn't surprising. BYU was the two seed in that tournament playing against the 5 seed, they were the favorites. They didn't pull of any upsets in the tournament and didn't steal a bid, they just happened to be the team that got the MW conference bid. Pulling of an upset of the #6 team in the conference championship, to me, is bigger than beating a team your favored to beat in the conference championship. Even if the result is the same. If it was just a regular season game, I would agree that the ranking isn't as important but it's a combination of factors. The fact that it would be two upsets in two nights, they got beat badly by both teams, and they will be stealing a bid from a team.
