Rotten Tomatoes suggests it's because the movie tiptoes around Barnum's
less desirable traits. I think judging art like that is dumb. Art should be judged on its own merits, not how it fits into a collective desire for social justice. If someone else wants to make a movie telling the true story of PT Barnum then that can be judged on those merits. The Greatest Showman isn't meant to be a faithful retelling of one man's complicated relationship with societal outcasts.
