You're completely right in that they play very different roles and very wrong
about what that means in terms of comparing the two. Ronaldo plays further up the pitch than the Messi, as much more of a winger or out and out striker. Messi plays deeper and when Barca have the ball the offense is built around Messi playing the ball in the center of the attack. Yet, even though Messi plays deeper and in less of a striker's role, Messi has 533 goals in 629 club appearances. Ronaldo has scored only three more goals, 536, despite having appeared for his club 729 times. Messi's career assists ratio is also higher than Ronaldo's.

Ronaldo is very good at what he does (score goals_, but I think it's pretty clear from watching the two week in and week out that Messi is by far the more complete player (and a better teammate). He is easily, in my opinion, the GOAT, with only Pele and Maradona giving him competition. I've never seen anyone play football even close to Messi's level. Not even Ronaldo.

Regardless, we're pretty blessed to be able to see both of them play so often and at the same time. What a time to be alive.
