1996 was Lavell Edward's 25th year as head coach.
In the prior 24 meetings with Utah the record was 19 wins to 5 losses, with 3 of those 5 losses coming in the 3 consecutive years leading up to that 1996 game. The Utah player in the picture Harold Lusk (to this day still their all-time leading interceptions record holder) was a senior who had never lost to BYU.
Even though the recent record has favored Utah, the overall record during Coach Edward's years was very lop-sided in favor of BYU. The 1996 win made it 20 wins in 25 years but you can't tell me that the Cougars weren't highly emotional about the win giving the recent losing streak. Despite that likely very charged situation, and in the home team's stadium no less, these players showed amazing class after the game to a star player for the opposing rival team.
Fortunes have reversed the last 25 years and Utah is again on a long win streak with (I think) EVERY player in that team never having lost to BYU.
I hope and expect this scene from the 1996 game will be repeated after a win this Saturday.
Go Cougs!
