I think it's mostly true - but even this depends on where you are - a German

friend of mine who came to the US said her surprise was the opposite - was that she DIDN'T see fat people. But she was spending time in LA, SF, and NYC. Not many fat people in those locations and actually more of a fanatical workout and fitness mentality.
