Yes. NCs trump all.

However, when we compare bowl games from '84-'87 with '06-'09. They are pretty comparable. UCLA was ranked #15 going into the bowl game, Oregon St. #16, Ohio St. #17. Virginia and Michigan were no better than the UCLA, Arizona or Oregon teams that we played recently.
