The reason they cancelled it was that they didn't want to depress overall
theatre attendance in a crucial season. The threat didn't actually have to be credible (it probably isn't), all that had to happen was that enough consumers thought it was credible enough to stay home.
They've got other movies in the theatres that they want to keep selling tickets for.
