Clay wasn't simply paying attention to details and celebration meant more to Clay than crossing the end zone line with the pig skin. Mentally, that was just DUMB and uncalled for. I wonder if CFB would do better to change the ruling to say instead of just crossing the end zone line (that seems to extend vertically for eternity as well as horizontally) why not have every CFB player touch the football in the end zone, similar to a Rugby try.
Would that cut down on bone headed plays? Probably not, but from the coaches POV, they are shaking their heads in disbelief, especially since ball security is emphasized. That one play would of put Utah up 14-0 and momentum in that game early on was in Utah favor.
End result, air sucked out of RES and UO played composed. I don't feel sorry per se, but this is one film I would use to show younger kids on NOT what to do in an important game.
