As a Nor Cal lifer whose family are SF natives
and whose main office is currently about a half mile from the Giants I can tell you -

in the 80s and 90s the Giants fan base was notoriously crappy. The "battery chucks" as they were sometimes called (because of their endearing practice of chucking batteries at opposing players and fans) were almost a different group than the Niner fans. In the 80s the Dodgers had a much better, more civil and civilized fan base.

Granted, things change and I like a lot of the personalities and people that have come through the Giants organization in this last decade. And the Giants fan base has shifted as well because of an infusion of Midwesterners and Northwesterners who moved to SF in the 90s and early 2000s. The diehard SF fans in my org (the ones that wear Giants gear on gameday) moved to SF as adults from Missouri, Wisconsin, Idaho, Oregon and Indiana. Basically, the tech and new media boom have fostered a large new SF fan contingent who aren't from Nor Cal. Which is totally fine.

Ironically, the two actual Nor Cal natives in the org (me and one other) are an A's fan and a Dodger fan.

SF's fanbase still has a huge yewt contingent. As does the Dodgers. But pretending that one fan base is meaningfully better than another is silly.

p.s. I think I remember / suspect that you are also a Nor Cal native. So maybe you'd remember what I'm talking about.
