1 - use it as insurance not as maintenance. Go with a higher deductible. At least $1000 but higher if you can afford it. Don’t get towing or glass coverage ($0 deductible for glass). If you use it, that will come back to bite you on future rates. Get a AAA membership for towing and that kind of stuff. It isn’t that much and some carriers give enough of a discount it is almost a wash. Then AAA will handle towing and things like that and it doesn’t become a claim on your policy. Again use insurance only as an emergency situation rather than maintenance for glass and towing.
2 - shop it every 6 months if your rate increases. I’m not seeing progressive increase that much. In fact (this is Arizona) most progressive policies are renewing with no increase now. We are through most of the rate increases here with them. Some states it takes longer to get the increases approved so you may still be seeing increases but I think things are stabilizing but let’s be honest, they have no loyalty to you, shop it.
3 - bonus item - carriers are going more and more to individualized rating. Have good driving habits. They all offer a huge discount for the tracking apps and it will help you drive better. If you get a ticket, go to traffic school if that is an option to keep it off your record. I know people don’t like the idea of being tracked but if you allow it, the discount can be huge. How much you drive and the time of day and phone usage and hard acceleration and braking are all indicative of the level of risk in your driving behavior. Don’t pay for someone else’s behavior if you are better than average.
