IOW, if the Big12 gets 3 teams in every year, then the play-in game would be between the 3rd and 4th place teams for the final spot, while your 1st and 2nd place teams get to rest. You'd still have that extra game with a lot of the line, so people would tune in, but your top 2 teams would get a "bye" week to rest up for the playoffs.
