I believe I have empathy. If I were in his situation I would feel absolutely

awful. Unfortunately feeling bad and saying sorry - if that has even happened, doesn't change anything. If I were in his place, I wouldn't want jail time, but I would expect jail time, and I would feel that it was just.

Having empathy doesn't mean feeling bad for someone and doing everything in our power to remove any discomfort or consequences from them.
