Sam Brannan led a group of saints via voyage from New York around the tip of
South American and arrived in San Francisco (Yerba Buena at the time), then he rode out to Brigham Young and the vanguard company near Green River iirc to try and convince them to go all the way to the bay area. By that time, Brigham Young was pretty set on the Great Basin.
