In previous games, it wasn't just that his offense was off ... he was getting blown by people on the dribble. What changed?

This is the kind of defense you see in closeout drills at camps/practice, but rarely see in a live game.

My guess is it stems from a conversation about wanting him on the court, but needing to trust his defensive effort.

Active feet, active hands (but don't reach), legs bent, stay on your feet.

Short steps and didn't overcommit. Overcommits kill young players defensively.
