It sounds like OP and his wife are open to it, but despite her limited cognition, their daughter is aware enough to know
what it is and the social stigmas and whatnot that come from it. Can’t imagine knowingly going from honors student athlete to likely qualifying for SPED but not being able to bridge the gap between why I can’t go back to the life I lived.

Hate to bring this in, but is there a lawsuit to get school’s insurance to help with the years of care she MAY need?

The closest experience I have with this is with my brother-in-law who developed fat emboli syndrome after fracturing
