Yeah - I’d install the defeat for that. GMs with it have shown it’s problematic.
Half ton wise:
New: I like the 3.0 Duramax best; not flashy but torquey and incredibly efficient. And no cylinder deactivation!
But a late model Tundra with their 5.7 is another good way to go. Not efficient but strong and largely bullet proof.

3.5L V6. Don’t recall the dealership having any 5.0L when I was looking.

I’d follow that advice; 3.5 is quick but it’s complex design can lead to issues
