because they both looked really bad yesterday. ALL QB's have games like this, including guys who end up (after working through their mistakes, bad reads, poor throws, and bad games) like Brady, Brees, or Montana.
But Jake was injured last game, and even with some plays he'd like to have back, he still almost pulled it off, and only lost because someone's helmet decided to boink the ball on a punt. That game turned on about 3 plays. Then yesterday, Jake, as the announcers pointed out, was absolute nails the entire second half, when he finally got better protection. He was picking the ASU defense apart the entire second half. Throws were crisp and some were absolute NFL QB-esque.
He did throw the game clinching pick, but I'm not convinced it was all on him. That ball went right through Lassiter's hands to the DB waiting behind, but was very catchable. Is it possible there was a better choice, like another WR to just move the chains, rather than a possible home run? Yup. Do I wish they had tried a shorter route / safer route just to move the chains, (especially with the down, and time left on the clock)? - Double Yup. Did Jake miss the game tying TD when he missed an open JoJo down the sideline, a couple plays earlier? - Yup. But these things happen, and there may have been other times earlier in the game, where they could have chosen another play, or checked down to another option, but since a catch was made, we don't even consider that there were "better" options. So, when it works out, hindsight becomes blind. Whereas, when it doesn't work out, it's easy to analyze the "what-ifs" forever. That being said, this was gut-wrenching, because I had no doubt that with the time, and 4 downs to play with, that BYU was going to get the go ahead TD, barring some catastrophe. Well, hello, catastrophe - 2 games in a row.
But I've said it before, Jake is high risk / high reward, and he goes for the throat (something I enjoy, albeit I didn't enjoy the last 2 games). But when you go for the throat, sometimes you get KSU and Arizona, sometimes you get OSU and Utah, and sometimes you get KU and ASU.
But Jake is not "regressing." His throws and decision making (even with the mistakes) are looking more NFL-like all the time. Mark it down, he will be the premier QB in the B12 next year.
