Utah/BYU Comparables vs Central Arkansas
SCORE:
Utah - 98, CARK - 63
BYU - 88, CARK - 50
Utah scored 10 more points but allowed CARK to score 13 more. Utah beat them by 35, BYU beat them by 38.

3PT SHOTS:
Utah 19-50, 38%
BYU 15-44, 34%
Utah shot really efficiently, hovering above 40% through the first 35 minutes of play. Got greedy with them at the end and started chucking more misses in the final minutes. Their 19 3's made tied their team record which was actually set earlier this week when they opened with Alcorn State and shot 19-38 for 50%. Given Mark Popes goal for BYU to attempt at least 35 3's every game last season, these attempts by both BYU and Utah thus far this year are eye-popping. This new NBA style of launching as many or more 3's than 2's is catching on apparently.

FG:
Utah 30-65, 46%
BYU 33-72, 46%

FT:
Utah: 19-23, 83%
BYU: 7-11, 64%
Team FT% is one of the things that concerns me most about BYU this year. I hope we see lots of improvement from Dallin when he gets back on the court.

REBOUNDS:
Utah O-12 D-39 Total-51
BYU O-20 D-29 Total-49

STEALS:
Utah - 12
BYU - 11

BLOCKS:
Utah - 8
BYU - 8

TURNOVERS:
Utah - 13
BYU - 11

FAST BREAK POINTS:
Utah - 12
BYU - 12

POINTS IN PAINT:
Utah - 20
BYU - 36
This is one of the few stats that really differed. BYU showing they can be more aggressive/effective in the paint. Also benefitted from more put backs from having more offensive rebounds.

BENCH POINTS:
Utah - 28
BYU - 23

Individual Stat Lines of Note:
(U) Gabe Madsen - 25/1/4 (6-13 3PT, 9-16 FG)
(Y) Egor Demin - 18/11/4 (4-7 3PT, 7-13 FG)

(U) Mike Sharavjmats - 13/8/8
(Y) Ritchie Saunders - 16/2/8

(U) Ezra Auser - 13/1/3
(Y) Keba Keita - 6/0/10

(U) Jake Wahlin - 9/1/3 (2-2 3PT and killed it on defense with 4 blocks & 6 steals)
(Y) Kanon Catchings - 17/1/3 (4-11 3PT, 3 blocks, 1 steal)

(OFF THE BENCH...)
(U) Mason Madsen - 15/0/3
(Y) Mihailo Boscovic - 11/2/3

Overall it appears BYU and Utah would be pretty closely matched going off all these stats. I think it would be quite a close back and forth game if they played this weekend. Utah showed they can light it up just as much and even more efficiently from behind the arc than BYU showed. Utah doesn't have anyone like Egor Demin, but they do spread the ball around well as a team. They looked every bit as long and tall vs Central Arkansas as BYU did.

It is notable that this was Utah's 2nd game, so they had the benefit of being able to improve some things from their first game, while for BYU, it was their first game in playing Central Arkansas. It'll be interesting to see how much more improved BYU can be on defense and their offensive rhythm and overall shooting percentages tomorrow night vs UC-Riverside. I'm hopeful BYU's overall talent can gel better and better together as the season progresses and rise to the higher ceiling they have than Utah's roster has, but Utah will still be dangerous with their ability to shoot the 3.

Go Cougs!
