Yah, that’s the gamble. It would essentially be like if Ohtani didn’t hit.
Imagine a world where he was a FA last year as only a pitcher, who was very good but coming off his second TJS and had never thrown more than ~160 innings. As a pitcher only he’d probably sign one of those 1+1 pillow contracts to rehab and position himself for free agency again as a 31 year old.
