Perhaps, because essentially all runs start b/t the tackles, but if there is one
thing that BYU "D" has been vulnerable to this year, and needs to improve on, it's SETTING THE EDGE." We have speedy LB's and are deep at safety, so this should not be that hard, but it has been, for some reason. Too many guys "pinching in" to make the play, or getting too engaged in blocks, so that their outside shoulder is locked, rather than keeping the outside shoulder free, and making sure to turn the play back inside, where someone else can make the play.

It happened vs UCF, and has been a clear issue all year. Whoever is the guy with the assignment to set the edge, needs to know they are the guy on every single play, and then make sure to string that edge out every play. If there's one thing the opportunistic BYU "D" could improve on, that's it, IMO.

And a close 2nd, letting TE's and other receivers convert LONG 3rd downs. More of keeping things in front on 3rd and double digits, positioning to make the tackle as soon after the catch as possible (rather than positioning to prevent the catch or trying for a takeaway), and then everyone ganging to the ball, as many of these 3rd and 4th down conversions have been converted by a lot of YAC! It's one of those things that's frustrating and deflating to watch as a fan, when they already worked so hard (and we "fan'd" so hard - JK) to get to 3rd and long in the first place.

What's nice is that these are all fixable issues, we have the personnel to do it, and have room to improve still, even with an amazingly good defense already. But, if BYU is to move forward in the CC and / or CFP, these issues likely need to be eliminated, if I'm coach Hill. Which I think is on his radar, as I've heard both JH and KS allude to both issues.
