Why I use Utes
1) Because it was introduced after Meyer started calling us TDS. In our responding by not using their nickname, we are acting like the little brother responding, “I know you are but what am I.”
2) Utah’s use of “TDS” is intended to raise the vitriol in the rivalry, and “yewts” does the same thing.
3) The Utes, Paiutes, and Goshutes are people with a long tradition and heritage. In this day of political correctness, I actually appreciate their supporting Utah’s use of their name and heritage. Although fully unintended, “Yewts” is disrespectful to their tribe and people.

I grew up in Utah, but having not lived there for many years, I have appreciated the rivalry without the angst I felt (and still feel when visiting) Utah. Some of my close friends in my are and stake are former Utah players (we also have former BYU players). We all get along and the rivalry is fun, but never vitriolic. I still see the vitriol online (and when in Utah), but even my Utah friends condemn the boorish behavior they see.

I love BYU sports. I can’t stand losing to Utah. But in the end, toning down the rivalry has been a positive in my life.
