I don't know the real answer to your question, but it's pretty common for the ref to help out a player in that
situation. Refs also seems to help players avoid a celebration penalty after a td and to help them avoid lining up offsides etc...
So whether or not it's "legal" for a ref to intervene, there are times when the culture of football (at the very least) allows for it.
