No, you said BYU would be ranked higher, but rankings always have recency bias.
If BYU loses to UU for our only loss on Nov. 9, even though both teams would have one loss and UU would have lost to a (subjectively) worse team than BYU, if the committee follows the same pattern as in the past, they would almost certainly move UU ahead of BYU in the playoff rankings.

It doesn't make much sense, but early-season losses are weighted much less heavily than late-season losses.
