Before the game, I mentioned I'd be shocked if Utah/Arizona drew as much as BYU/Kansas St did
And there were 3 reasons for that (from least to most meaningful), even before getting into any difference between BYU and Utah
- BYU and Kansas St were both undefeated, which means it carries more weight than an Arizona team which was 2-1 and thought to be struggling
- Arizona has traditionally had pretty terrible viewership, notably worse than Kansas St
- BYU/Kansas St was the only late game in that week. Utah/Arizona was also going up against Oregon/UCLA on FOX at the same time
Beyond that, the Georgia/Alabama game going into the early part of Utah's matchup also ended up hurting the Utah/Arizona viewership (though I didn't catch that one beforehand)
This isn't Ute apologism though - it's to highlight the inherent issue with single game anecdotal comparisons
We absolutely like this one...because it says what we want it to.
But consider....in a week and a half, BYU will play Arizona in a likely ranked-on-ranked matchup at 2PM on FOX. Which isn't much different from when Utah played Oklahoma St in a ranked-on-ranked matchup at 2PM on FOX a week and a half ago. And the Utah game got 2.4M viewers. While I'd like to see us do the same, I'm doubtful we will, because
- Arizona. As mentioned, they don't tend to draw well
- Utah @ Oklahoma St had some competition with #11 USC @ #18 Michigan....but beyond that, the rest of the games were just OK at best. #16 LSU/UCLA, #19 Louisville/GaTech, and then some other decently ranked teams playing mid-tier G5 teams (or Vanderbilt)
BYU goes up against one of the strongest competitive slates I've seen with #2 Texas @ #19 Oklahoma, #7 Penn St @ #11 USC, and even Stanford @ #14 Notre Dame all playing at the same time. Being honest, we're likely to be the #4 game in that time slot, whereas Utah was the #2 option when they were in the same spot. Not because of any inherent BYU/Utah difference, but just difference in what other games were available
There's a real likelihood we DON'T get to 2.4M in that game. And claiming the viewership debate has been decided in favor of Utah if that happens would be just as flawed as claiming it's decided now since we drew more against K-State on ESPN late night with no competition than Utah drew against Arizona on ESPN late night, going head to head with Oregon/UCLA
