To me, the real value of driverless tech is when the cars can talk to each other.
We have tools now for communication between cars ... but it's limited.
The car in front of me can signal to me "I'm going to turn right" or "I'm slowing down".
That's good. Imagine what driving would be like if we didn't have even THAT much communication.
BUT that is really pretty limited.
Imagine if the communication was "I'm slowing down to 25 mph" or "I'm on the perpendicular street on the right and I'm turning to your street in 2 seconds", or "I'm planning on driving straight ahead at 80 mph for the next 40 miles"
To me, when much more extensive communication of intent and immediate action is possible, then the driver (the computer probably) can make better, safer, more informed choices.
JUST having the car take care of the car doesn't get to the full advantage of "computer driven cars" in my opinion
