It's not "as big of a deal". Which is not the same as saying it's not "a big deal"
When BYU reaches 3rd down, they get a 1st down 48% of the time.
That means 11 of the conversions have been on their 3rd down play and 8 more have been on their 4th down attempt. 48% is a lot different than 28%.
Would it be nicer to not involve 4th down as much? Sure, but let's put more context around what that 3rd down number has really meant so far.
