Jews were never really big into football.
Some Jews played football but it wasn't common. Baseball was a totally different story. Sandy Koufax, during the six-year span when he ruled baseball's pitching statistics, was quite probably the most respected Jewish man in America to his coreligionists. Same with Hank Greenberg earlier. Lots of Brooklyn Jews wore black armbands for years after the Dodgers moved away to L.A.
