Imagine a scenario where BYU outperforms expectations this year, not even anything insane like 11-1, but a solid season. Let's say BYU finishes 8-4 (with losses to Kansas St, Arizona/Oklahoma St, Utah and one other). We go to a decent bowl and possibly win, making us 9-4. Kalani is secure, we're seen as a young team on the rise, recruiting trends upward (with a massive 2026 class starting to commit) and we do well in the transfer portal. We'd be set up well for 2025 and beyond.
Now imagine the opposite scenario; BYU finishes 5-7, falling apart again after a good start. Something like go 3-0 in OOC, lose to Kansas St to be 3-1, beat Baylor to be 4-1, then lose 6 consecutive games against Arizona, Oklahoma St, UCF, Utah, Kansas, Arizona St making us 4-7 for an end-of-season meaningless game with a horrid Houston team. Now there's a general funk over the program, but Kalani still almost certainly keeps his job one more year. He's clearly on the hot seat though, so a stellar recruiting class is hesitant to commit to BYU. And incoming transfers are likewise less inclined to join us, while the continual losses (6 in a row, 2 full months without a win) has hurt the locker room and camaraderie, making our players more likely to look elsewhere. Now we're hurting for 2025 and for the future.
