This ^^^. It doesn't matter how much he paid for it or how much he put into it.
The law says that it only matters what the vehicle in its current condition at the time of the accident was worth. So go find KBB and comps online on autotrader, etc. (although those are asking prices not sold prices) and be ready to show that the torque converter added value to the vehicle.
