Sounds like your company's leadership is at fault. Not sustainability.
* Switching florescent tube lighting to LEDs has an ROI of 18 months
* Anti-idling efforts save 15-20% on gas mileage.
* Recycling when sorted correctly is exceptionally helpful for the environment (i.e. an aluminum can is back on the shelf in less than 60 days from touching the recycling bin, and saves 60-90% energy than refining raw ore)
* Most steel is made from recycled metal.
* Composting food waste is huge saver of water, GHGs, and nutrients.
* Buildings are 70% of our urban power consumption. Investing or retrofitting in energy saving systems is a massive boost for the environment and bottom line.

I could go on. But just like any organization, poor leadership should not be blamed for sustainability being 'wasteful'. Unfortunately, throwing money at the problem also doesn't make it work. It's not fun to change behavior... but even an utra-efficient LED light with most it's power from solar is worse if left on than hitting the lights when leaving the room with old incandescent bulbs. Sometimes it's hard to change, and that's why you see companies wasting money as way to 'virtue signal' since it the easy way out.
