Fallen on hard times will hire a moving crew. They’re not that expensive, when you consider the home purchase/sale that usually accompanies their services.
But I also have witnessed in the church members go out of their way to force a service opportunity.
I had a ward member walk by my front yard today. I was standing on my lawn, a moving crew of four guys was in my house packing up all my stuff and a U-Haul was in my driveway and they were loading it up.
The ward member was puzzled and then asked me “wait, today’s your moving day? Have you told the ward so they can come help?”
It took me a bit to realize what they were asking but I kinda gestured to the house and said “I think I have the help that I need…” and asked them how their day was going and if they had any fun plans today.
This isn’t a unique instance. I’ve seen elders quorum presidencies basically volunteer to be the moving crew when they hear someone is moving in or out of the ward. It’s bizarre. I would never. I agree that the service should be reserved for exceptions… not every member needs (or should utilize) the EQ moving service.
