You definitely need a car in the Dolomites. Bus service exists, but is
infrequent.
And if you want to get up to some great vistas, you'll need a car.
I have driven the Strada delle Dolomiti at least 10 times, and I can't imagine what I would have missed on the bus.
Not to mention the overall comfort and flexibility of a car.
