If anything what we are currently seeing is a big turning point the other way. MLS lack of economic flexibility has made them MLB, very regional following and now the growing number of soccer fans in the US have access to leagues and games around the world and there fandom is turning elsewhere.

MLS missed a window and now the quality gap and horrible TV contracts has driven fans elsewhere.

And trust me - this isn't 30 years ago... people from Europe are not clamoring to live in the US when they have options in Europe to make money - soccer or otherwise. Awesome place to visit, but if you have money why would you want to live in SLC vs Sevilla???
