Interesting prediction on minutes per game for the coming season…
Not sure who is behind this analytic site (Hoop Explorer) or how accurate the algorithms are it uses but it looks favorably on BYU for the coming season much like Bart Torvik and Evan Miyakawa did last season but w/o factoring in any contributions from Demin or Knell. it has us the 5th highest rated team in the Big12 behind ISU, Houston, Baylor and AZ.

It also predicts minutes per game for the players this season as follows:

PG’s
Crawford 1.7 mpg
Hall 30.0 mpg

W/F’s
Saunders 30.4
Baker 25.4
Stewart 17.6
Mag 17.6

PF/C’s
Catchings 17.6
Koz 4.6
Fouss 30.4
Keita 25.2

Knowing we need to find minutes for Knell and Demin, I don’t see how Stewart will get many minutes at all and we’ll potentially see some of the minutes trimmed a little for Hall, Baker and Saunders to give time to Demin. In this new group of players I see Knell’s role changing a little (as it should) with him being more of a 3pt/catch-and-shoot specialist and getting less minutes than he had in the past. If you take 12 mins from Stewart and 5 each from Hall, Baker and Saunders you would have 20 mins for Demin and 7 for Knell as a 3pt specialist.

Another area where minutes could be shifted to the guard rotation is with Fouss and Keita. It predicts 55 mins a game between the 2 which means there will be minutes each game with the 2 of them together on the court at the same time. Keita is strictly a rim-runner and doesn’t have the ball-handling, shooting or passing skills to play any other role in the offense but pick-up garbage points around the basket (offensive rebounding, etc) or setting screens and getting feeds rolling to the basket. Fouss can do those same things as Keita but also has a very polished low post game. A new skill he started to show last season was being a little bit more of a facilitator learning from Khalifa executing the DHO’s in Pope’s offense last year. Towards the end of the season he started to show better court awareness and the ability to find teammates cutting to the basket. Not sure if we’ll see that aspect of his game continue to evolve enough (along with a 3pt shot) to make them a viable pairing as forwards together on the court at the same time, so some of their minutes could likely get trimmed and mean more minutes for Hall, Baker, Saunders, Catchings and/or Demin. Even a few more minutes for Crawford to play the 1 alongside Hall.

It will be interesting to see who emerges in this group to claim minutes and prime roles in the rotation.
