For most of our local clubs they don't have any competitive swimming until 8 at the earliest
and there are very few until 10. My daughter is 9 and she is only 1 of two that age in the club and in the meets she is going up against 12 and 13 year olds. It's also not very "competitive" as they don't take it very seriously and it's more just getting them used to it. I also just did a quick search and those ages showed up the most common online too, not just my anecdote. In my area kids don't get really serious until 13 or 14.

I'm not saying there aren't others that start much earlier, nor do I think that's a bad thing. I actually dislike how early serious competition starts in gymnastics. I think it burns them out and causes too many injuries. But I also think it really impacts how people view the sport and the best in it.
