I've seen too many situations where the people in the lane that continues don't allow people from the lane that is ending to merge - lining up bumper to bumper and not allowing any gaps. And I've seen too many situations where folks in the lane that is ending also don't want to zipper - and 2-3 cars jump into an open gap in the lane that continues instead of alternating.

There are too many bad drivers to expect this to work, unfortunately.
