Here's my theory. Kanon wanted guaranteed playing time from Purdue, not realizing that no one guarantees playing time. He asks for guarantees, Painter says no. Kanon gets released and talks to other programs, including BYU. No one gives Kanon guarantees for playing time, which is why he goes back to Painter the next day. Painter says he can't come back and Kanon ends up at BYU.
