simply means he's unproven at a whole new level of competition. There aren't a lot of freshmen tearing up a league as deep as the Big 12. We've had a handful of incoming freshmen at his hype level. They have been mainly contributors, which is good, but they all have had to face a learning curve. To be honest, in the Big12, if most of our FR are getting major minutes, we are likely having a bad year.
And in the days of transfer portal insanity, he may be gone after one year to a new school.
Therefore, I think it's appropriate not to hype him up as a guy that's going to completely change a season for us. IF he shows some promise and sticks around for year two, that's when you'll see me get excited about him. Keeping or recruiting proven/experienced/transfer type players is more important now.
P.S. I would have been more excited about him as a signee in the pre-transfer portal days when it wasn't quite so easy to bail. Now, anything less than a 5* FR signing is kinda like, "ok I guess we'll hope something might come out of this one day and not be a total waste of development effort".
