Karen Curtis Lamb was BYU's first female athlete with a scholarship. Karen Kennington was the first recipient of the Leona Holbrook Spirit Award. The women played in the AIAW and later competed in the NCAA. Several of BYU's women's teams at that time were top ten. I wish we'd bring back men's wrestling and gymnastics or bring on soccer. We have men and women's rugby who would also like the go ahead. The Big 12 is adding beach volleyball. I don't know if BYU will add that sport.
Regarding Title IX, a lot of men were so angry because no one would ever attend a woman's sport, but I think excellence breeds its own fans. Once WBB becomes outstanding (top 20) on a yearly basis, I believe our fans will increase proportionally. Just like they have in soccer and volleyball. I remember when hardly anyone attended men or women's BB and VB games. The only draw was football and it never filled the stadium. How times have changed, hmm?
