So I'm on the plane from Grand Junction back to Seattle, all smiles after spending a freakin' awesome week on Lake Powell and wearing a BYU football shirt. When we are leaving the plane, I stand up and the burly dude behind me says, "don't you know BYU fans have to exit the plane last?"
I smile and say, "Wow, first I've heard of it."
He says, "It should be the rule."
"Throwin' shade early this morning, I see"
"Yeah, well I am a Utah fan."
"I already gathered that. Bet you are excited to be in a great conference like the Big XII."
"Not with you guys."
"Feeling is mutual."
As I walked off the plane, the woman sitting next to me said, "Well, that guy was a jerk."
I feel like I am trying to be more calm, joking and respectful about the rivalry because it has become venomous, but this has happened to me several times--sometimes its jokingly, while other times it's just snarky and mean. Why do some Utes feel so inclined to have to say something derogatory, or even something, if you are wearing anything BYU? Or is this not the norm? I'm sure some BYU fans do this too, but I would never be a jerk to some random person on a plane about wearing a Utah shirt.
