I have to say that the best/most successful effort of US govt is the American Battlefield Monuments Commission - the overseas cemeteries are awesome, inspiring, and beautifully maintained. Thought-provoking, of course, and reverently preserved.
Have been to Normandy, Margraten, Cambridge, Belleau-Wood, Chateau-Thierry, Flanders, Henri-Chappelle, St Mihiel, Luxembourg and Anzio sites, and they are a highlight for any day touring.
We took 3 days to visit Normandy beaches, Pont du Hoc, and then Bayeux cathedral and to see the tapestry.
And inhale crepes.
Great memories.
